The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit Science and Technology oriented Educational and Research Institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research agenda of CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres: The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC), the Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC), the Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C), and the Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC). Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s culture.
The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated individual to join the Institute as an Associate Research Scientist, who will be integrated in the Computational Science and Engineering team of CaSToRC. The candidate will pursue research on modelling and simulations for the in-silico design of materials, with a strong focus on environmental sustainability and collaboration with industry. The successful candidate will be involved in the nationally (RIF) funded projects, AgReCOMPOSITES and Nano-SuperCaps. The selected candidate is expected to lead co-development projects and provide consultations/trainings to support the European Digital Innovation Hub of Cyprus (DiGiNN).
In general, the Associate Research Scientist is expected to:
Contribute to all aspects of sponsored Research, Innovation and/or Development projects (including conducting research, co-authoring publications, implementing deliverables, reporting activities, dissemination activities, etc.).
Participate in new grant proposals (including the possibility of leading proposals/projects as PI or co-PI).
Teach courses at the CyI Graduate School to gain teaching experience and engage graduate students in research projects.
More specifically, in the context of the AgReCOMPOSITES and Nano-SuperCaps projects, the successful candidate is expected to be highly involved in the design, development and application of mathematical and computational modelling and simulation methods to investigate microscale phenomena in engineering applications and address challenges relevant to the Green Transition, such as environmentally sustainable materials and green tech (eg. carbon capture, energy storage, catalysis). The successful candidate is expected to conduct cross-disciplinary, application-driven research, collaborate with industrial partners and design workflows that combine mathematical modelling such as multi-scale modelling, asymptotic techniques, uncertainty quantification and Bayesian approaches, atomistic simulations and continuum modelling such as finite elements or CFD. In the context of activities supporting the DiGiNN project, the successful candidate will interact with industrial and public sector organisations, perform needs assessments, and design or deliver consultations, trainings and projects that showcase the potential of advanced digital technologies to the respective stakeholders.
In addition, the successful candidate is expected to actively pursue funding opportunities, contribute to proposal preparation and be involved in scientific publications.
The initial period of the appointment will be for a duration of 12 months, with the possibility of renewal subject to performance and availability of funds. An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate.
Job Specific Responsibilities:
Develop multi-scale methods, atomistic and continuum models and simulations for complex sustainable materials or microscale processes in green technology.
Develop models, algorithms and codes for simulations in engineering applications.
Lead or contribute to projects or consultation services with industry/public sector.
Contribution to project reports and deliverables.
General Responsibilities for an Associate Research Scientist:
Conduct research, innovation and development activities based on project requirements.
Develop new research ideas and contribute to the Center’s and the Institute’s research agenda.
Publish in selective peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
Secure funding to sustain research activities.
Mentor early-stage researchers, research engineers, and graduate students.
Engage in teaching activities relevant to expertise (if core-funded, classroom teaching is mandatory).
Participate in consultation activities as per field of expertise and center requirement.
Contribute to dissemination activities (such as public seminars or targeted talks) to promote external recognition at the national and international levels.
Contribute to planning and organization of Center-level and Institute-level internal and external events (such as workshops, conferences) to promote external recognition at the national and international levels.
Engage with industry and public organizations to support the role of CyI.
Provide independent input about strategic decisions related to research directions, methodologies, grant applications, etc.
Required Qualifications
A PhD degree in Physical Sciences, Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science or relevant disciplines.
Strong background in in-silico material design and multi-scale modelling.
Strong track record in cross-disciplinary research and collaboration with industry.
Previous experience in at least two of the following areas: multi-scale modelling, statistical (Bayesian) methods for Uncertainty Quantification, asymptotic methods related to solid/fluid mechanics, molecular dynamics simulations for complex molecular systems, Finite Element Methods, HPC.
An understanding of concepts related to green materials and green tech such as circular materials, waste valorisation, energy storage, carbon-capture and utilisation.
Previous experience in collaborating with experimentalists from Mechanical or Chemical Engineering and Material Science disciplines.
A growing publication record with at least some publications in which the ARS is the first or corresponding author.
A growing experience contributing to sponsored research projects.
Growing mentoring capabilities.
Independent initiative in conjunction with effective teamwork.
Prior Experience as a Post-Doctoral Fellow
Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
Proficiency in English (written and verbal).
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
High level of organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills.
