The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated Researcher to join the Institute’s CARE-C Centre of Excellence, Impacts and Policy Department (IPD) on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at Athalassa’s Campus.

The selected candidate will join a research team that aims to support early warning systems against vector-borne diseases using climate-sensitive population dynamics and disease transmission modelling.

The successful candidate will engage in the Climate-Driven Vector-Borne Disease Risk Assessment (VEClim) project, which aims to develop a web-based geographic information and decision support platform to inform the public and enable the design of efficient, cost-effective, and ecologically sound and sustainable vector control measures to prevent future outbreaks and spreading of vector-borne infectious diseases.

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

1.       Contributing to the development of the VEClim Platform (https://veclim.com), climate-sensitive vector population and disease transmission model repository, and the environmental variables and vector surveillance databases.

2.       Performing internationally competitive scientific research through climate-sensitive vector dynamics and vector-borne disease transmission modelling.

Position Specific Required Qualifications:

·       PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, Epidemiology, or a relevant subject

·       Experience in scientific scripting and programming languages, such as R, Python, Julia, or C/C++.

·       Good command of the Linux operating system

·       Understanding of biological and ecological, as well as mathematical concepts.

 

Position Specific Preferred Qualifications:

·       Experience in working in HPC environments.

·       Experience in software development (e.g., desktop or mobile applications, front- or back-end development).

·       Experience in working with complex computer modelling systems.

    The successful candidates should be physicists with interest in lattice Quantum Chromodynamics, with experience in theoretical physics, programming, and data analysis. The successful candidates will contribute to the activities of the local group, and in particular will i) work on application codes of the group, including implementing new algorithms, scaling, optimizing, and porting new methods, ii) run these codes on leadership systems such as those available via EuroHPC, and iii) perform analysis and postprocessing of the resulting data, including documenting the results in presentations and preparing manuscripts.

    Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

    1. Carry out research activities and software development in lattice QCD applications
    2. Carry out simulations and analyses as required in RIF funded projects, including the preparation material documenting the results
    3. Contribute to scientific publications
    4. Contribute to project deliverables and participation in project meetings

      The successful candidate will primarily work in the Biodiversity & Green in Mediterranean Historic Cities (B_Green) project funded by the Driving Urban Transitions Partnership (https://dutpartnership.eu/).

      The successful candidate will be responsible for the support of the contribution of the Virtual Environments Lab to the project which involves the creation of a digital space for the project indicators to be applied and accessed in demonstrator historical centres. Specifically, the Virtual Environments Lab team will develop an online platform with visualisation features and a content database. The candidate will collaborate with web developers to support data collection, processing, transformation, digital tools’ development, including setting up user evaluation sessions.

      Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

      1. Provide support in GIS modeling and data visualisation.
      2. Provide support in conducting data collection and GIS analysis related to urban modelling and environmental data visualisation.
      3. Assist in stakeholder engagement, participating in meetings and workshops to help in collecting stakeholders’ knowledge.
      4. Assist in the development of innovation frameworks, such as living labs to connect stakeholders around a common strategy and action plan.
      5. Help in preparing project reports, contributing to scientific publications.
      6. Actively participate in an interdisciplinary and international research team.

      Position Specific Required Qualifications:

      • Master’s degree in urban modeling and visualisation related fields such as Geography or Architecture or Computational Landscape design and Ecology.

        USRL is comprised of various sizes of fixed and rotary wing Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs), a mobile Ground Control Station and a fully equipped laboratory and workshop dedicated to the construction of Unmanned Systems and their Applications. After a period of research and prototyping in the field of UAS, the USRL is looking into further growth with emphasis on commercialization of its products and services. In order to assist accomplishing this new target, the team is seeking experienced Software Developers to join the highly competitive USRL team. As part of their appointment, the successful candidates will be responsible for the improvement of current UAS in terms of automation and user-interface friendliness as well as contributing to the development of new UAS for customized applications.

        The successful candidates will be part of the Research and Development Team of the USRL under the supervision of CARE-C Director.

        This position is supported by the EU H2020 project “EMME-CARE” (Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre; TEAMING Grant no. 856612), within which the Cyprus Institute established the “Centre of Excellence” in Climate and Atmosphere research for the EMME region (CARE-C) in cooperation with EU Advanced Partners (Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Germany; University of Helsinki in Finland; and CEA in France).

         

        Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

        1. Design and development of software related to UAS.
        2. Programming of UAS hardware such as flight controllers, data acquisition systems, and telecommunication systems.
        3. Understanding existing code, providing improvements/extending functionality of flight controllers and related hardware modules/applications.
        4. Code development for Interfacing payload and avionics (communication, data handling).
        5. Programming development for improving automation and safety of flights.
        6. Development of user-interfaces to support mission-specific capabilities.
        7. Rewriting prototype systems to more commercialized and user-friendly solutions.

        Position Specific Required Qualifications:

        Applicants must hold at least a BA/BSc in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or in a related technical discipline or a BSc in Physical Science, or Engineering combined with work experience (as per job description) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Development, or related technical experience. 

        1. Junior Level: no additional experience required, however an additional year of relevant work experience will be considered an advantage
        2. Mid-level Level: additional 2 years relevant work experience
        3. Senior Level: additional 4 years of relevant work experience

          Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

          1. Develop continuum simulation methodologies for degrading microplastics by numerically implementing asymptotic models and using Boundary Element Methods.
          2. Perform parametric studies using the resulting code to investigate the effect of material parameters and environmental conditions.
          3. Assist in model development using matched asymptotics and integral methods.

           

          Position Specific Required Qualifications:

          • PhD degree in Physical Sciences, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, or relevant disciplines
          • Previous experience in continuum modelling and simulations.
          • Previous experience in at least two of the following areas: matched-asymptotics, boundary integral methods, modelling of low Reynolds number fluid mechanics, Boundary Element Method simulations, mechanical modelling (e.g. elastohydrodynamics), numerical modelling of PDEs (eg diffusion equation), FSI, CFD

              The successful candidate will play a crucial role in ensuring the efficient operation of The Cyprus Institute’s Vocational Education and Training Centre (CyI VET centre), managed by the CyI Graduate School.               Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

              1. Designs and updates promotional materials for various media platforms (websites, social media etc.)

              3. Establishes and maintains communication with stakeholders, including industry partners, public and private organizations, potential trainees and trainers to promote training programs
              4. Handles financials including payments, subsidies, budget tracking
              5. Coordinates logistics, including scheduling of trainings, allocation of facilities, managing room bookings and the general day-to-day operations of the training programs
              6. Serves as the primary point of contact for training programs, providing information and support to training participants, trainers, and external partners
              7. Ensures regulatory compliance of training programs and administrative processes
              8. Prepares reports on training program performance, participant feedback and other key metrics
              9. Communicates with HRDA regarding programs, subsidies and compliance requirements and other related matters
              10. Be updated on trends and developments in professional training to enhance the training offerings and align with market demands

               

              Position Specific Required Qualifications:

              • Competence in using design tools for the creation of promotional material
              • Experience in coordinating events and training activities
              • Familiarity with the principles of vocational /adult/lifelong education

               

              Position Preferred Qualifications:

              • Bachelor’s degree in an education-related field, particularly Adult and Continuing Education, Lifelong Learning, Vocational Education will be considered an advantage.
              • Previous experience in administrative support, particularly in an educational or vocational training setting is desirable.
              • Certification as a Vocational Trainer – Level 5 CyQF/EQF by the Human Development Authority of Cyprus will be considered an advantage.

                  The successful candidates should have a background in theoretical physics with specialisation in lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) simulations and analyses. A strong background in large scale, lattice QCD, multi-GPU application codes will be considered an advantage.

                   

                  In particular, the candidates will i) work on application codes of the group, including implementing new functionality or porting new methods to new HPC systems, ii) running these codes on Tier-0 systems such as those available via EuroHPC, and iii) performing analysis and postprocessing of the resulting data, including documenting the results in presentations and preparing manuscripts.

                   

                  The successful candidates will be engaged in the physics projects of the group, and specifically in the projects MuonHVP, DeNuTra, and PulseQCD, funded by the Research and Innovation Foundation of Cyprus, with topics which include hadron structure, muon anomalous magnetic moment, hyperons, hadron resonances, renormalization of extended operators, and large-scale simulations and machine learning approaches for lattice QCD. The group is a member of the Extended Twisted Mass Collaboration.

                  1. Contribute to the research activities of the group in the area of lattice QCD. This will include activities as required by the projects of the group in the physics areas highlighted above

                      • Design and develop a nowcasting scheme and create robust, user-friendly software solutions tailored to our team's needs.

                      More specifically, the candidate will be supporting the implementation of advanced nowcasting algorithms for the World Bank funded AirQforce project, AI-driven models, as well as real-time data processing pipelines, and user-centric software solutions to meet project requirements and enhance team workflows.

                      The successful candidate must have a background in software development, data analysis, algorithm design, and expertise in real-time forecasting or nowcasting systems. This is a prerequisite for the rapid engagement of the candidate in ongoing research projects which require immediate knowledge and experience on nowcasting algorithms and AI-driven models.                         The successful candidate will contribute to the ARIADNE (AbsoRbIng Aerosols in the Eastern MeDiterraNEan) project recently selected for funding by the Cyprus Research & Innovation Foundation (RIF) under its “Excellence” call.

                        The selected candidate will be supporting the implementation of the RIF “ARIADNE” project dedicated to the experimental characterization of the chemical composition and sources of the absorbing component of Particulate Matter (PM) using a large suite of off-line (filter-based) and on-line scientific instrumentation.

                        The successful candidate must have a background in atmospheric sciences, with demonstrated experience in experimental research and more specifically on the characterization of aerosol properties.  This is a prerequisite for the rapid engagement of the Post-doc fellow in the research project which requires immediate knowledge and experience on PM chemical analyses and PM source apportionment.

                        Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

                        1. Perform specific PM chemical data processing (QA/QC, PM source apportionment) using a large suite digital tools (e.g. US-EPA PMF, PSCF, NWR, ZEFIR, FLEXPART)
                        2. Prepare regular reports (deliverables) gathering the results of the above processed data as a base of further scientific exploitation and interpretation (communication, publication)
                        3. Support the field deployment and operation and the data exploitation of on-line scientific instruments dedicated to the real-time characterization of the PM chemical, physical, and optical properties in Cyprus and abroad.

                        • PhD in Atmospheric Sciences, Environmental Sciences or related field
                        • Research experience in experimental aerosol characterization
                        • A good track record (as first author) of publications in scientific journals or peer-reviewed conferences on experimental aerosol properties

                              The Water Department investigates hydrologic and ecosystems processes and tests agro-ecosystems innovations and management practices through field observations, experimental research and modelling, in cooperation with various stakeholders in Cyprus and abroad.

                              The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the research projects of the Water Department, with a special focus on the newly funded Horizon Europe TERRASAFE Project on "Terrestrial resilience and restoration strategies for (semi) arid and fragile ecosystems through a multi-actor approach". This project is a cooperation between research groups and innovators from Austria, Cyprus, England, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden and Tunisia. This project aims to develop an integrated approach for the mapping and analysis of land degradation status, drivers, impacts and responses.

                              The successful candidate will process and analyse satellite and airborne imagery and other spatial datasets to understand the effect of climate and humans on the productivity and degradation of land and water resources. The candidate will lead the development of GIS Apps (Google Earth Engine). The candidate will contribute to hydro-ecological fieldwork and ground-truthing activities.

                              Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

                              1. Processing and analysis of remote sensing imagery (optical, radar) and other spatial data for land and water productivity and degradation assessments.
                              2. Development of GIS Apps (Google Earth Engine).

The successful candidate is expected to be a hands-on person to start developing methods to qualify and quantify sub-pptV levels of base molecules, relevant to new particle formation. Other novel application ideas to utilize the groups’ assets are highly welcome. CARE-C offers full access to state-of-the-art instrumentation, the MION-Orbitrap, MION-APi-TOF, NAIS (*3) and PSM2.0. The Post-Doctoral fellow will have the opportunity to support students in their research, and also to implement their own research project at the group.

                                It is expected from the successful candidate to support the group’s vision with a hands-on attitude in the lab and to be able to analyse and interpret the data produced independently. Publishing and dissemination of the scientific work is expected. Good coordination and communication skill are a must as the group is international with several traveling in workshops and campaigns.
