Application process open *
The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit Science and Technology oriented Educational and Research Institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres: The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC), the Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC), the Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C), and the Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC). Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s culture.
The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated individual to join the Institute as a Research Scientist for the BAE, ERC funded project in Aerosol Formation Studies in the CARE‐C Centre of Excellence. The successful candidate will advance the CARE‐C’s research and innovation agenda in its scientific focus of Environmental Observations through experimental and theoretical approaches investigating new particle formation research. The work is mainly focused on the field of mass spectrometry using the new MION‐APi‐TOF and an ultrafine aerosol particle counters using the nCNC and NAIS.
In general, the successful candidate is expected to:
Contribute to all aspects of sponsored Research, Innovation and/or Development projects.
Lead their own research thrust and team building, as well as collaborate within the scope and mission of the research unit they belong to. This responsibility includes the financial support of their team through grants.
Collaborate with CyI faculty and other research teams, through synergistic activities and projects.
Teach courses at the CyI Graduate School and engage graduate students in research projects either at Master’s or PhD level.
More specifically, the main objective for the candidate is to lead the investigations of aerosol formation, including physical and chemical characterization, in collaboration with the Cyprus Atmospheric Observatory (CAO) technicians, postdocs and PhD students in the group. As part of the ERC Grant on the role of Base molecules in AErosol formation (BAE), with ref. number 101076311, the candidate will work with focus on the role of base molecules in the formation of new particles and their fate in the atmosphere. The successful candidate is expected to support the group with novel innovative directions to utilize the group’s assets and take an active role in the operation of instruments related to NPF observations within the ACTRIS framework and beyond. Engagement in international field campaigns, workshops and laboratory experiments (CLOUD experiment in CERN) should be expected.
In addition, the selected candidate is expected to engage and explore new collaborative projects. We expect the candidate to demonstrate successful proposal writing skills, supervision of students and postdocs and a solid publication record, including publications in new particle formation studies. Publications in the role of bases is highly appreciated. Active regional and international networking and support participating in educational programs of the Institute will be highly commented.
The appointment will be open for the duration of the ERC-project (until end of April 2028) with initial contract for 24 months. An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate.
Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:
Conduct and lead research, innovation and development activities according to the center’s and group’s research targets and on project requirements.
Develop new research projects and contribute to the research group’s, the Center’s and the Institute’s research agenda.
Publish regularly in high-impact, peer-reviewed, journals and conferences.
Secure funding to sustain and expand research activities.
Develop innovation through exploitation and valorization strategy for research results, where applicable.
Support and mentor researchers, research engineers, and graduate students.
Plan and participate in consultation activities as per field of expertise and center requirements.
Organize and participate in dissemination activities (such as public seminars or targeted talks) to promote external recognition at the national and international levels.
Lead the planning and organization of team-level and Centre-level internal and external events (such as workshops, conferences) to promote external recognition at the national and international levels.
Lead new initiatives to engage with academic, industry and public organizations, in consultation with faculty.
Collaborates widely within the Center and the Institute in synergistic activities.

PhD in Atmospheric sciences, Physics, Chemistry or a relevant scientific field
Solid publication record in recognized peer-reviewed journals and international conferences, some of which as invited speaker, in which the RS is corresponding author, where applicable.
Demonstrated track record of attracting and completing research grants.
Demonstrated data analysis skills in new particle formation relevant instrumentation (chemical ionization mass spectrometry, ultrafine particle counters).
At least three years of prior experience as an Associate Research Scientist or equivalent position
Demonstrated mentoring capabilities.
Team leadership skills.
Independent initiative in conjunction with effective teamwork.
Proficiency in English.
