The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated Reseacher to join the Institute’s Computational Science and Engineering team of CaSToRC on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at Athalassas Campus.
The successful candidate will pursue research in the context of the nationally (RIF) funded project MICROFIBRES, focusing on modelling and simulations of microplastics.
Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:
- Develop continuum simulation methodologies for degrading microplastics by numerically implementing asymptotic models and using Boundary Element Methods.
- Perform parametric studies using the resulting code to investigate the effect of material parameters and environmental conditions.
- Assist in model development using matched asymptotics and integral methods.
Position Specific Required Qualifications:
- PhD degree in Physical Sciences, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, or relevant disciplines
- Previous experience in continuum modelling and simulations.
- Previous experience in at least two of the following areas: matched-asymptotics, boundary integral methods, modelling of low Reynolds number fluid mechanics, Boundary Element Method simulations, mechanical modelling (e.g. elastohydrodynamics), numerical modelling of PDEs (eg diffusion equation), FSI, CFD

- Handles financials including payments, subsidies, budget tracking
- Coordinates logistics, including scheduling of trainings, allocation of facilities, managing room bookings and the general day-to-day operations of the training programs
- Serves as the primary point of contact for training programs, providing information and support to training participants, trainers, and external partners
- Ensures regulatory compliance of training programs and administrative processes
- Prepares reports on training program performance, participant feedback and other key metrics
- Communicates with HRDA regarding programs, subsidies and compliance requirements and other related matters
- Be updated on trends and developments in professional training to enhance the training offerings and align with market demands
Position Specific Required Qualifications:
- Competence in using design tools for the creation of promotional material

Position Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in an education-related field, particularly Adult and Continuing Education, Lifelong Learning, Vocational Education will be considered an advantage.

The Unmanned Systems Research Laboratory (USRL; http://usrl.cyi.ac.cy), a flagship facility of the Cyprus Institute (CyI) develops and operates state-of-the-art Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) in various fields of research, including atmospheric sciences, environmental monitoring, including image-based earth observations.
Due to the increasing demand in flying operations mostly related to environmental monitoring and more specifically to preventive forest surveillance for the identification of fires at early stage, The Cyprus Institute is seeking two (2) UAS/UAV Pilots (in the rank of Technical Research Assistant) to actively contribute in flying operations as well as maintenance and further development of the UAS for various purposes. The successful candidates are also expected to contribute with the maintenance and repairs on the UAS and support scientists and engineers of the team to integrate new instruments on board the UAVs.
Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:
- Participating in Forest Surveillance operations
- Coordinating and actively participating in ground and flight operation efforts including mission planning and inspections
- Developing and maintaining a high level of proficiency in the operations of the UAVs
- Responsible for maintaining the airworthiness of the USRL UAV fleet to be available at any time
- Responsible for safeguarding flight operations
- Contributing to the development of UAS (Platforms, Systems and Ground Control Station)
- Conducting scheduled Test Flights for the purpose of the development and optimization of the platforms and the avionic/navigation systems
- Ensuring compliance with service guidance, Cyprus Institute’s policy and procedures

The successful candidates should have a background in theoretical physics with specialisation in lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) simulations and analyses. A strong background in large scale, lattice QCD, multi-GPU application codes will be considered an advantage.
In particular, the candidates will i) work on application codes of the group, including implementing new functionality or porting new methods to new HPC systems, ii) running these codes on Tier-0 systems such as those available via EuroHPC, and iii) performing analysis and postprocessing of the resulting data, including documenting the results in presentations and preparing manuscripts.
The successful candidates will be engaged in the physics projects of the group, and specifically in the projects MuonHVP, DeNuTra, and PulseQCD, funded by the Research and Innovation Foundation of Cyprus, with topics which include hadron structure, muon anomalous magnetic moment, hyperons, hadron resonances, renormalization of extended operators, and large-scale simulations and machine learning approaches for lattice QCD. The group is a member of the Extended Twisted Mass Collaboration.

- Design and develop a nowcasting scheme and create robust, user-friendly software solutions tailored to our team's needs.

The Research Engineer will work closely with the GMI and a research team from the University of Cyprus to develop AI methods that will utilize medical imaging data to estimate the Gleason score and tumour stiffness through medical imaging.

- Perform thorough literature review of the current trends and advancements in the use of AI in the medical imaging field and prostate cancer research.

Leventis Professor in Archaeological Sciences and others to establish an online database of published metal compositions for copper-based artefacts from Cyprus, and to write a review paper on the use of brass and zinc in Cyprus from the earliest time to the early modern period. They will submit requests to study including sampling artefacts in relevant public collections, conduct microscopic and chemical analyses, and document the results to the highest academic standards.
Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:
- Collate published chemical and lead isotope analyses of copper-based objects from Cyprus
- Develop with relevant colleagues an online database for analysed copper-based objects
- Draft a review-level manuscript for publication in a suitable journal on brass and zinc in Cyprus
- Cooperate with the De Cadmeia project at STARC
Position Specific Required Qualifications:
- PhD in Chemistry, Metallurgy, Geology or related fields, and or Specialisation in archaeometallurgy
- Relevant publication on Cypriot copper-based metal artefacts

Leventis Professor in Archaeological Sciences and others to establish an online database of published metal compositions for copper-based artefacts from Cyprus, and to write a review paper on the use of brass and zinc in Cyprus from the earliest time to the early modern period. They will submit requests to study including sampling artefacts in relevant public collections, conduct microscopic and chemical analyses, and document the results to the highest academic standards.
Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:
- Collate published chemical and lead isotope analyses of copper-based objects from Cyprus
- Develop with relevant colleagues an online database for analysed copper-based objects
- Draft a review-level manuscript for publication in a suitable journal on brass and zinc in Cyprus
- Cooperate with the De Cadmeia project at STARC
Position Specific Required Qualifications:
- PhD in Chemistry, Metallurgy, Geology or related fields, and or Specialisation in archaeometallurgy

They will also coordinate the activities of the ERA Chair project ‘One Archaeological Science in the BEMME Region’, including hiring staff, organising training and outreach activities, managing project funds, and offering grant writing support as needed, in close communication with CyI operational staff. In addition, they will focus on the development of cross-sectoral stakeholder relations, actively linking the ERA Chair to government agencies, SMEs and NGOs, promoting joint activities with and organizing training for these stakeholders, and support the ERA Chair in establishing programs that will allow better interaction with SMEs such as providing instrumental analytical resources and associated knowhow as well as administrative and IP Rights (IPR) support for archaeological applications.
Activities will also include pursuing innovation through local and regional partnerships, IP management, enhancement of contacts with stakeholders, identification of collaboration opportunities, connecting research outcomes to possible exploitation, as well as raise awareness in society for the importance of archaeology and cultural heritage to modern society. The successful candidate will contribute to the ARIADNE (AbsoRbIng Aerosols in the Eastern MeDiterraNEan) project recently selected for funding by the Cyprus Research & Innovation Foundation (RIF) under its “Excellence” call.
The selected candidate will be supporting the implementation of the RIF “ARIADNE” project dedicated to the experimental characterization of the chemical composition and sources of the absorbing component of Particulate Matter (PM) using a large suite of off-line (filter-based) and on-line scientific instrumentation.
The successful candidate must have a background in atmospheric sciences, with demonstrated experience in experimental research and more specifically on the characterization of aerosol properties. This is a prerequisite for the rapid engagement of the Post-doc fellow in the research project which requires immediate knowledge and experience on PM chemical analyses and PM source apportionment.

The Water Department investigates hydrologic and ecosystems processes and tests agro-ecosystems innovations and management practices through field observations, experimental research and modelling, in cooperation with various stakeholders in Cyprus and abroad.
The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the research projects of the Water Department, with a special focus on the newly funded Horizon Europe TERRASAFE Project on "Terrestrial resilience and restoration strategies for (semi) arid and fragile ecosystems through a multi-actor approach". This project is a cooperation between research groups and innovators from Austria, Cyprus, England, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden and Tunisia. This project aims to develop an integrated approach for the mapping and analysis of land degradation status, drivers, impacts and responses.
The successful candidate will process and analyse satellite and airborne imagery and other spatial datasets to understand the effect of climate and humans on the productivity and degradation of land and water resources. CAO has been established by the Cyprus Institute in 2015 with the objective to establish long-term (multi-year) high quality atmospheric observations representative of the EMME region and better document air pollution and climate change (current levels and future trends). The CAO is currently part of ACTRIS, AERONET, WMO (GAW), TCCON and EMEP international networks and aims to integrate additional EU research infrastructure such as ICOS. The CAO gathers the latest generation of scientific instrumentation for in-situ and remote sensing online monitoring of aerosol properties, reactive and greenhouse gases species following international standardized operating procedures.
The successful candidate will advance the CARE-C’s research and innovation agenda in its scientific focus of Atmospheric Observations area through supporting primarily (but not only) long-term GHG observations using in-situ, remote sensing, and mobile platforms. More specifically, the candidate shall be responsible for the full technical operation of ICOS-compliant and TCCON GHG measurements in Cyprus and the further development of long-term GHG observations in the EMME. Although the main focus will be on GHG, the successful candidate will also support research activities on Reactive Trace Gases and more generally contribute to the general activities of CAO.
Through their engagement in the above activities, the successfully recruited candidate will support and lead whenever it is possible; 1) the implementation of competitive research programs of CARE-C on trace gases, 2) the organization and implementation of intensive field campaigns in Cyprus and abroad on GHG, 3) specific technical / instrument developments related to long term observations, 4) support to early career research scientists (e.g. PhD candidates and Postdoc fellows) on trace gas measurements, 5) the further processing and exploitation of atmospheric data and drafting of scientific communications (publications, posters) in close collaboration with the EOD/GHG research group.
